INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE

Welcome to the home page of  Başkent University Institute of Science.

Graduate school is a great opportunity for students to explore more specific areas of study through research and teaching. The decision to pursue postgraduate studies is an exciting and challenging journey. Some of the learning outcomes of a graduate level study can be listed as follows:

  • ability to conduct independent research and development activities.
  • ability to promote and disseminate knowledge based on research and development activities.
  • ability to provide leadership in multi-functional project teams.
  • an understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
  • a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning.

Master's education is substantial, dinamic and important part of graduate education, which through its responsiveness to societal needs for advanced education plays a continuuing and prominent role in the training of the proffessional workforce.

The Doctor of Philosophy program is designed to prepare a student to become a scholar, that is, to discover, integrate and apply knowledge, as well as communicate and disseminate it. The program emphasizes the development of the student's capacity to make significant original contributions to knowledge in a context of freedom and inquiry and expression.

Graduate education is obviously quite different from undergraduate education. While undergraduate degrees essentially provide an "overview" of a wide variety of fields of academic research; graduate degrees focus on fairly specific areas of study, usually derived from topics studied during an undergraduate degree.

The Institute of Science started education in 1996-1997 firstly with the master program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. In 1997-1998 master program in Computer Engineering; and in 1998-1999 master program in Industrial Engineering and doctorate program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering were opened. Since 2004-2005, students are accepted to the master program in Information Technologies and System Management (at the Department of Statistics and Computer Science) and to the master program in Biomedical Engineering.

If our programs would meet your need for upgrading skills, acquiring new skills and the experience of postgraduate study, please review the information on these pages and also the departmental webpages in your area of interest.
